The Luwero Police are pursuing assailants responsible for killing a child and disappearing with her torso in a suspected ritual murder. The brutal incident occurred at Kikyusa Modern Day and Boarding Primary School in Wankanya village, where a teacher stumbled upon the decomposing head of a toddler in the school garden.

Samuel Nkwanga, the LC 1 Chairperson of Wankanya village, promptly alerted the Police upon receiving the information. Upon investigation, the Police recovered the head, hands, and clothes of a child believed to be approximately two years old. Nkwanga expressed the difficulty in identifying the victim, as no missing child had been reported in the area or at the school.

"We don't have any missing child in the area or at the school and are unable to identify the victim,” he said. He said that the efforts to search nearby bushes for the missing torso together with the police didn’t yield any results. Luwero District Police Commander, John Ojokuna confirmed that the recovered head and hands were transferred to Mulago Hospital mortuary for further examination as part of the ongoing investigations.   "Currently we haven’t established the identities of the victim but we are still investigating how the head reached the scene and hunting the thugs behind the suspected murder," Ojokuna said. Ojokuna mentioned the decomposed state of the head, indicating that it had been discarded at the scene several days earlier.

The Police plan to conduct DNA tests on the recovered body parts in case the victim's family emerges. " Currently we have no case of a child missing in the district which indicates that the victim could have been killed in another place and parts brought here," Ojokuna said. Ritualistic murders have been previously reported in Luwero district.

Earlier this year, Yasin Serunga, a former pupil at Destiny Primary School in Wobulenzi town, went missing from his home in Kisule Butanza village, Luwero. His body was discovered the following day with his head and toes missing, and to date, the Police have not located the missing body parts. One suspect was arrested and remanded in custody in connection with Serunga's murder.

The Police's crime report for 2022 highlighted 58 homicides in Luwero, ranking the district eighth in terms of homicide cases nationwide. The Police are diligently investigating these cases and working towards justice for the victims and their families.
