Police have whisked off Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, the National Unity Platform-NUP presidential candidate shortly after his nominations.

Police intercepted Kyagulanyi shortly after his nomination and ordered him to disembark from his vehicle a few meters from the nomination center and be escorted in vain.

As a result, the officers smashed the windscreen of Kyagulanyi’s and battled to grab him from the hands of his supporters and security team.  They wrestled with the police officers as they tried to prevent the officers from taking their boss.

Police also sprayed teargas inside Kyagulanyi’s vehicle during the fracas. Police had cleared the area where Kyagulanyi was arrested and even asked journalists accredited to cover the nominations not to come out.

Those that were hanging around the gate were asked to leave. Police whisked Kyagulanyi and drove off through the exit towards the faculty of science and technology that candidates were using to leave the nomination center as he called on Ugandans to fight for their rights.

When asked where Kyagulanyi had been taken, the Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson, Patrick Oyango said he was safe, saying he will speak to journalists in the evening. Onyango couldn’t however, explain whether or not the candidate is under arrest.
