President Appoints Committee to Harmonize University Salaries

Audio 1

President Yoweri Museveni has directed the formation of a committee to harmonize salaries for all academic staff at public universities across the country.
The move is in response to an ongoing strike by Makerere University lecturers over delayed salary increments.
Prime Minister Apollo Nsibambi told a news conference in Kampala today that the committee will be required to synchronize all public university lecturers' salaries and propose pay increases on a regular and sustainable basis. The committee will be expected to report back to the president on February 28th next year.

The committee will comprise representatives from the Ministries of Education and Sports; Finance; Public Service; and Gender. Representatives from the public university councils and academic staff associations will also be included on the committee.
Meanwhile the Makerere University Vice Chancellor, Livingstone Luboobi, has dismissed claims that the university is planning to sack its striking staff. He said given the stringent appointment procedures it is impossible to dismiss the lecturers.
