More than 140 inmates have asked the Aids Support Organization (TASO) management to set up outreach centeres in Masaka prisons. The prisoners say, this would ease their ability to know their HIV status and to access treatment.

Amon Magezi, the Kabonera prison warder and TASO chairman for inmates in Masaka, said on Thursday that there has been a persistent plea by the prisoners to have HIV testing and counseling services brought closer to them.

Magezi said HIV infection rate in prisons is rising partly due to lack of counseling and treatment centers.

Magezi says prison warders in the region have so far benefited from the massive condom drive campaigns.

Madina Nakasi, the Centre manager for TASO Masaka, says they are planning to set up outreaches at the Masaka regional prison and Kabonera prison.

Nakasi says the outreaches are very essential for prisoners since because it’s difficult for them to live their confinement to access the services outside the prison gates.
