National
Unity Platform-NUP supporters in Rakai district are protesting the arrest of
their candidate for the current Rakai LC V Chairperson’s seat.
Eliab Kiggundu
Sango was arrested in Ntantamuchi sub-county for unknown reason ahead of the
vote tally.
He had gone to monitor the progress of the exercise after
information leaked that agents at different polling stations were planning to
rig the polls for their candidates.
It is said that Kiggundu was heading to Kakundi health center
II polling station when he was intercepted by police, which confiscated his
mobile phones and took him to an unknown place.
Sango was running against Godfrey Bajjungu, the NRM
candidate, FDC’s Elisa Nicholas Ssekitende and independent candidates Samuel
Kaggwa Ssekamwa, Ali Balekye, John Kasiiba, and Robert Nyondo.
Sango’s
Chief Campaigner, Grace Nalubega, says that she received a call from the
candidate indicating that he had been surrounded by police.
//Cue in: “Amawulire agasembyeyo…………………
Cue out:………..okugezaako esimu ye tekyaliko.”//
She says that she has engaged Charles Mubiru, the Rakai
Resident District Police Commissioner to intervene in time to see that Sango is
released from wherever he was taken.
Mubiru confirmed to URN the arrest
of the candidate, saying that he has rushed to Ntantamuchi to ensure that he is
released.
He says such
unexplained arrests may cause unrest in the district, which he does not want to
happen.
