Residents Protesting after Ssenyonjo' death
Police have quelled protests by residents of Kaluma-Kasasa Village in Bukulula Sub-county
in Kalungu district following the death of a young man in a local bar. It
is alleged that Martin Ssenyonjo entered the bar around 8 pm on Monday where he
joined a group of people on a drinking spree.
He was reportedly found unconscious
in front of the bar on Tuesday morning but died moments later under unclear
circumstances. Ssenyonjo’s death triggered protests by his family members and residents.

They pursued Gladys Namaganda, the bar owner and her waitress, Milly
Nakirijja accusing them of being behind their colleague’s death. Namaganda and Nakirijja decided to hide at the
residence of Dawson Kato, the LC I Chairperson Kaluma-Kasasa village. Vianney
Birungi, the Officer in Charge of Lukaya Police they were called in to contain
the situation to save the accused persons.
Birungi explains that they have arrested Namaganda and Nakirijja to aid
the ongoing investigations into Ssenyonjo’s death.
According to the suspects, Ssenyonjo drank himself to oblivion, which could
have caused his death. “His colleagues helped him out of the bar to allow
me to close it around 10 pm,” she said. She says news Ssenyonjo’s
death shocked her since he was alive by the time he left the bar.
Deus Kiweewa, one of the elders, says Namaganda's bar is known for
fights, adding that several people have been brutally attacked and beaten in
the bar. Devine Ndagire, another resident, says there are several bars
that are operating openly in contravention of the presidential ban to stop the
spread of COVID-19 while the police and local authorities look on.
According to Birungi, the suspects will be charged for operating a bar in violation
of the Ministry of Health guidelines meant to fight the pandemic while
investigations continue to ascertain the cause of Ssenyonjo’s death. The
body is still lying in a mortuary at Bukulula Health Center IV pending postmortem.
