A 42-year-old man in police custody in Kabale district for alleged impersonation.

Fred Byaruhanga, a resident of Tank hill village in Ruti Ward in Mbarara Municipality, was arrested this afternoon while posing as a lawyer at Kabale High Court on Makanga Hill in Kabale Municipality.

Byaruhanga, who claimed to be a lawyer from Ngaruye Ruhindi and Company Advocates, had appeared before Justice Moses Kawumi Kazibwe to present a withdraw letter of a case in which Leading Distillers Uganda Limited had sued the then Kabale Resident District Commissioner, Cox Nyakairu and Kabale District local Government.

Through Ngaruye Ruhindi and Company Advocates, Leading Distillers Uganda Limited had sued Nyakairu and Kabale District Local Government in a civil suit number 88/2010 for destroying its adulterated drink locally known as waragi. The potent drink claimed lives of over 100 people in 2010.

However, luck ran out for Byaruhanga when he failed to defend his withdraw letter which led the presiding judge, Moses Kazibwe, to ask him to present his credentials.

Justice Kazibwe immediately inquired from the law firm and was told that they don't know Byaruhanga.  Justice Kazibwe ordered for Byaruhanga's arrest when he also failed to present any form of identification.

Elly Maate, the Police Spokesperson for Kigezi region, says that the suspect is being held at Kabale Police Station for questioning. Maate says that Byaruhanga will appear in court to answer the charges accordingly after investigations into the matter are complete.
