The Wakiso Deputy Resident District
Commissioner, Justine Mbabazi has ordered for the arrest of conmen operating
around Kasangati Magistrate’s Court.
Mbabazi, who is in Charge of Kasangati Town Council
and Nansana and Makindye Sabago Municipalities, notes that the con men defraud
unsuspecting members of the public at the court with promises of helping to
expedite their cases.
He says several people who are ignorant of the court system have
fallen victims to the con men.
Mbabazi says the information
they have gathered so far shows that the fraudsters put on t-shirts resembling
those of court workers and hold fake identification cards.

The RDC’s directive comes a few
days after the newly appointed Kasangati Grade One Magistrate, Said Barigye
complained about a group of people, which he said cheats unsuspecting litigants
to see him.
“They keep around here (at court) and solicit
monies from people saying that they are going to help them process their
documents. At times they tell them that they have my contact and so they can
help persuade me in helping the litigants but seeing a magistrate isn’t a
business and we don’t need money to make a ruling,” Barigye told Uganda Radio
Network in an interview.
Adding that, “I have realized that after conning
somebody they pretend as if they are coming in my chambers and some of them
could actually seek my audience and pretend like they are inquiring
something.”
One of the officers at Kasangati Magistrate’s court told URN
on condition of anonymity so as speak freely about the vice that many of the
con men disturbing litigant are actual lawyers.
