Wakiso District is hunting for 1.5 billion shillings to reconstruct Mayanja Bridge which was washed away after River Mayanja burst its banks. The bridge connects Nansana Municipality to Mende Sub County.

The Wakiso District Engineer, Samuel Mwesigwa says although they had put up a temporary wooden deck to aid movement of pedestrians across the river, there is need to construct a permanent bridge.

Currently, the district diverted more than 300 million shillings which had been earmarked for construction of Nsangi Bridge, towards the river Mayanja bridge project. However, Mwesigwa says the money is inadequate compared to the nature of the project.

The Wakiso LC V Chairperson, Matia Lwanga Bwanika says although there is an urgent need to reconstruct a bridge at Mende, residents should conserve the wetlands to avert possible future disasters.

Bwanika says without protecting the environment, River Mayanja will continue to flood and destroy infrastructure in the area.
