Residents of Mugarama Landing Site, Labour Sub County in Serere district have burnt Mugarama Police Post after a policeman shot dead a fisherman.

Henry Stanley Oluka, attached to Mugarama Police Post shot dead Kokas Omuron at Mugarama Landing Site on Monday.  This is after the local defence secretary notified the police of a group of people who were playing loud music, dancing and drinking in one of the bars around the landing site.

According to the Regional Police Spokesman, David Ongom Mudong, Oluka immediately responded and while at the scene, Oluka was confronted by a group of people who were allegedly drunk prompting him to discharge bullets that hit Omuron through the left-hand side of the ribs and killing him instantly.

The angry residents then charged and burnt all the police files, tables and other things found police post. They also raided the quarters of the police officers and burnt some of their belongings to ashes.

Oluka sustained serious injuries while fleeing the scene and is currently admitted at Soroti Regional Referral Hospital in a critical condition.

Ongom notes that it was unprofessional for the officer to open fire on civilians and also a mishap in attending to security calls alone at night.

“As the police, we do condemn the unreasonable force of using live bullets by the officer against unarmed civilians. We also condemn the act of confrontation with police officers on duty by members of the public through acts of violence and resistance to Lawful orders. The Police officer is currently under arrest to help with investigations though he is still under medical attention”, he said.
