Residents Mourn UPDF Pilot Killed in Helicopter Crash

Residents of Busiu Sub County in Mbale district are mourning the death of Lt. Benon John Wokalo.   

Wokalo together with Maj Naome Karungi perished in the military Jet ranger AF302 which crashed in Gomba district on Tuesday.

It was sombre mood on Wednesday when Uganda Radio Network reporter visited the home of Wokalo in Mbale district.

Tents were being erected by well-wishers, while other mourners gathered in groups speaking in low tones.

“He was a popular man who loved everyone around him, he would not come here and he doesn’t look for me to say hello, he used to hug me every time was greeting” Agula Wokoli the immediate neighbour intimated.    

Ivan Wokalo, the deceased young brother says that Wokalo has left a big a gap in the family.

He says that when their father died in 2014, Wokalo pledged to support the family which he fulfilled until the time of his death.

Irene Mutonyi, the stepmother, says that deceased had started constructing for her a house.

Kenneth Wokalo, another brother wants government to support the deceased’s family.

Wokalo has been taking care of 18 children whom he has been supporting with education and basic needs.  

He is survived by a widow and three children.
