Residents of Eastern Division in Ntungamo municipality are up in arms against the council for filling up Ruhufa wetland in central cell. They argue that Ruhafy Wetland is the only water catchment area in the cell.

Recently, Ntungamo municipality started filling up Ruhafu wetland to pave way for the opening of access roads because the area has been allocated to private developers. But residents will not have any of this. Led by Godwin Byamugisha, the residents say that they have started feeling the impact of filling up the wetland.

They claim that the area has already started experiencing flooding, which was not the case before. Byamugisha says that ever since the council started pouring murrum in the wetland, all the water that was flowing through it finds its way in their houses.

Byamugisha says that their pleas to Ntungamo municipality authorities to halt the project have not yielded any results. He says that they are now planning to pour onto the streets to express their dissatisfaction with council.

Dominic Buregyeya, another resident says because of blocking the wetland, the runoff water has been flooding his motor vehicle garage. He says that some of his customers have abandoned the garage because of the bad smell from the stagnant water that has nowhere to go.

Mary Bagyenyi, who owns a nursery school in the area, has temporally suspended business for fear of children drowning. Diner Tumwebaze, the Ntungamo district Enviroment Officer says that she tried to block the authorities from filling up the wetland in vain. She is now worried, that the town could flood when they get heavy rains. Joseph Besigye, the assistant town clerk in charge of Eastern Division declined to comment saying that they were locked up in a meeting discussing the same matter.
