300 families found in 10 villages that host Namavundu and Nile bank central forest reserves in Butagaya and Budondo sub Counties respectively in Jinja district are up in arms against by plans by the National Forestry Authority-NFA to open up new boundaries.

Residents claim that both forest reserves have well known boundaries, adding that creating new ones might result into land disputes.

David Ngobi, who boarders Namavundu Forest Reserve in Bulondo village, argues that the forest reserve was surveyed without consulting the public, saying there is no need of creating new demarcations.

Mohammed Mwanda, a resident of Kibibi village along Nile bank forest reserve in Budondo Sub County, accuses NFA of resorting to intimidation tactics by deploying armed policemen to force them to agree to the new boundaries.

Speaking at the harmonization meeting hosted by NFA in Wansimba village, Abdallah Suuta, the Butagaya Sub county LC 3 chairperson, said there is need for residents to participate in the process of boundary opening to clear suspicion of land grabbing. “The forest boundaries are already known to us as the 100 meters from the lake shores, therefore anything beyond that will not be tolerated," he said.

The Kyoga Range Manager, Stuart Maniraguha dismisses claims of land grabbing, saying they have embarked on public awareness about the demarcation process before installing the boundary marks towards the end of this year.

Maniraguha says the demarcation process will involve creating path routes for legal loggers and planting concrete boundary pillars because the old ones are no longer visible.
