Residents Raise Concern Over Poor State of Simu corner- Buginyanya Road

James Magomu, a Boda boda cyclist accuses Uganda National Roads Authority-UNRA of deliberately failing to open water channels and installing culverts that would stop running water from damaging the road. He says that they will stage a demonstration in a week’s time unless UNRA responds to their pleas to address the challenges on the road.

Residents and Motorists operating long Simu corner- Buginyanya road in Bulambuli district have raised concern about it sorry state.

They say the road is in dire state and impassable, which has made movement from the lower part of the district to the upper part almost impossible.  

The 12km road connects to major markets like Kamu, Kibanda, and Buginyanya.  It is also one of the major routes for tourists to Mount Elgon national park. 

In March this year, running water cut off a section of the road paralyzing the transportation of merchandise from the mountains.

Michael Musabulo, a resident of Simu Corner, says that the road has been in poor state for years. He says that they have severally for its rehabilitation in vain. 

Musabulo says that that they suffer losses because of the poor state of the road since their agricultural produce spends days on the road and ends up perishing.    

Gerald Nangoli, the Elgon North County Member of Parliament has asked UNRA to expedite the maintenance works to ease the movement of people and their goods.

George SSonko, the Eastern Region manager of Uganda National Roads Authority-UNRA spokesperson says the road is in their 2021-2022 financial year work plan for rehabilitation.

He says the works shall start soon.
