Motorists plying the Ntungamo-Kabale-Katuna highway are furious about the silence of Uganda National Roads Authority on the visible cracks that have developed on the highway. The Shillings 198.26 billion highway was competed by Reynolds Construction Company (RCC) in 2015.

However, the road developed cracks shortly after completion. The contractor reportedly covered the cracks with black oil instead of fixing them. The cracks are visible especially in Kamuganguzi, Kitumba, Kabale town, Kabaraga, Bukinda and Rubaare.

Geoffrey Byamugisha, a resident of Bukinda Sub County in Rukiga district, says while the commissioning the highway president, Yoweri Museveni told them that it would last for 25 years without any cracks. He however, says to his surprise the road has developed cracks just under five years after completion.

Byamugisha, who is also the Speaker Rukiga District Council, wants UNRA to investigate why the road has developed cracks this fast and find a solution.

Julius Tituryebwa, a road user from Buhara Sub County in Kabale district, says that such cracks put drivers at risk of accidents. He faults UNRA for remaining silent on the matter.

Robert Kakuru Byamugisha, the Executive Director Kick Corruption out of Uganda (KICK-U) and resident of Kabale, says the cracks are a sign of shoddy work.

He says the silence of UNRA about the cracks is a sign of neglect of duty on the party UNRA officials, which is very unfortunate.

The UNRA Kabale area Manager, Eng. Augustine Kabanda, acknowledges the problem, saying they are investigating the cause of the cracks.
