57-year-old man who has been on the run for hacking his biological mother to
death in Rubanda district has been found dead. Reuben Ruhamire’s lifeless body was
floating on Lake Bunyonyi on Wednesday following his disappearance on Saturday
after hacking his 80-year-old mother, Grace Munenga, a resident of Kabisha
village Kyenyi parish in Muko sub-county.
It is alleged that Ruhamire attacked his
mother while at home and hacked her several times with a machete for unknown
reasons. Munenga was rushed to the nearby Kyenyi Health II but died on arrival as
a result of excessive bleeding. Ruhamire’s brother, William Katondwe, says that
after the incident the suspect went into hiding after attempting to commit
suicide throw slicing his throat in vain.
Katondwe said
that it was not until around 4:00 PM on Wednesday afternoon when they found his
body floating at Hamukaka shores on Lake Bunyonyi. Elly Maate, Kigezi Region police spokesperson says that Ruhamire’s body was spotted by locals who were
sailing on the lake.
Maate says that police visited the scene and found the locals
had already retrieved the body and taken it to the deceased’s home. He says that police proceeded and conducted the postmortem
and cleared locals to start burial arrangements.
The case is registered
at Rubanda police station under file number CRB223/2021.
