More than 600 members of Village Health Teams-VHTs in Rubirizi district
have rejected the Shillings 50,000 paid out as COVID-19 allowance for July.
Rubirizi district
received and approved a supplementary budget of Shillings 267 Million from the
Ministry of Health to support the COVI-19
fight in the communities.
The
district allocated VHTs Shillings
87.9 million and tasked them to sensitize, mobilize, monitor and report COVID-19 cases in
their respective villages.
There are 293 villages. Each village was supposed to
receive Shillings 300,000 for three months to be shared amongst the number of VHTs.
However, to the surprises
of VHTs, each village received Shillings 50,000 for
July instead of Shillings 100,000.

Sofia Musiime, a VHT from Rwandara Village, says that they would happily serve as volunteers instead
of being duped.

Deo Ndyajunwa, a VHT from Nagara, says that the president in his
address promised the VHTs 300,000 per month but the district changed the
guidelines to Shillings 150,00 and has gone ahead to
further, reduce it to 50,000 without any explanation.
Harriet Nakamya, the Rubirizi Resident District Commissioner has called for calm from the VHTs, saying that they should share
the available money equally.

to comment on the matter.
