The Archbishop Church of Uganda, His Grace Stephen Kaziimba Mugalu has said that the creation of Ruwenzori West Diocese will only happen if the right procedures are followed.

Dr Kaziimba told Christians in Bundibugyo district that he has no authority as a person to grant a diocese. He was responding to demands from local and cultural leaders who tasked him to pronounce himself on the creation of the proposed diocese.

Many Christians and leaders anticipated that the Archbishop was to officially grant them the diocese on his visit. But Kaziimba said that the Church of Uganda has a well-organized procedure that must be followed.

Archbishop however said that he was determined to guide this process and once all the procedures are met the new diocese will be created. \

According to Kaziimba, the provincial assembly overwhelmingly approved the process of creating the diocese and tasked the verification committee to make a visit and make a report.  //Cue in: “This area everybody…

 Cue out: …dioceses in Uganda.”//

Kaziimba said that before the end of this month, a verification committee will again visit the proposed diocese and make its final report.

The Archbishop asked the Christians to complete the construction of the main cathedral at Bumadu Archdeaconry, the Bishop’s house and diocese offices.

The verification committee is expected to present its findings and then they will be discussed at the provincial assembly in August this year.

Once the report is approved, the assembly will then make a communication to the synod of Ruwenzori diocese to invite the nomination committee to make a search and propose two candidates for the first bishop.

The two names will then be sent to the province where a meeting of all Bishops will be called to select one name who will be the first bishop-elect. It will be after this that the Archbishop will propose a date when the new diocese will be officially curved out of the mother diocese.

Kaziimba appealed for calm among Christians arguing that the process for the creation of the diocese is so far on the right path. //Cue in: “You don’t have…

 Cue out: …it is peaceful.”//

Rev. Barnabas Tibaijuka says they are hopeful that before the end of this year the diocese will be granted.

//Cue in: “He has come, people…

 Cue out: …very big office.”//

In 2017, disgruntled Christians in Bundibugyo District requested a separate diocese from Ruwenzori and demanded the transfer of Canon Jonathan Kyangasha, who had been appointed Archdeacon of Bumadu by the Bishop of Ruwenzori Diocese.
