Rift Valley Railway -RVR workers are protesting nonpayment of their salaries since January this year.

The maintenance and rehabilitation workers have blocked the railway line at Bukyaye village in Nakalama Sub County in Iganga district since Monday using sticks, tree branches and removed some rails.

The more than 20 workers were deployed to repair and maintain the old Kenya-Uganda Railway line. The group under their umbrella body, Empower Youth Association, says it will not resume work or unblock the railway until they are paid.

Led by their chairperson, David Lameka, the workers claim they have tried to approach their bosses over the issue in vain.

Efforts to get a comment from Ministry of Works and Transport Permanent Secretary, Alex Okello  were futile as his known mobile phone number was switched off.

The works Ministry spokesperson, Suzan Kaiteke also didn't pick her phone when reached by our reporter.
