The Uganda Beach Soccer team, the Sand Cranes has intensified their training as they prepare for the Beach Soccer AFCON 2021 finals to take place in Senegal from May 23-29th.

The team entered residential camp earlier this week at the FUFA Technical Center in Njeru in a bid to have more time to prepare for their maiden appearance in the AFCON finals.

Assistant coach Bashir Mutyaba says the technical team has opted to organize friendly games among the players dividing them into two teams as a way of  getting match fitness.

Mutyaba adds that due to the COVID-19 restrictions the team will not have external friendly games. He however believes that the internal friendlies will help them assess the performance of the players to help them select the final squad.

Rica Byaruhanga, a Sand Cranes player says players are in good shape without any injuries. He says the team is not looking back but rather looking for glory as he calls on fans to support them in the tournament.

The player added the coaches are doing a great job by getting them in good form ahead of the trip to Senegal.

The Sand Cranes are drawn in Group A alongside hosts Senegal, Tanzania and the Democratic Republic of Congo.  Uganda's opening game will be against Tanzania before they play hosts Senegal and then conclude against DR Congo in the last group game.

Uganda Sand Cranes qualified for the Beach Soccer finals after their opponents Ghana withdrew from the qualifiers. This is the first time Uganda is playing in the finals of the Beach Soccer AFCON.
