Hundreds of security operatives have been deployed in Kitgum Municipality as reinforcements to the police operations against armed thugs that have terrorised the municipality in the recent past.

Security operatives ranging from the police Flying Squad, Field Force, senior detectives and the Uganda People's Defence Forces-UPDF personnel from Kampala among others are patrolling the streets of Kitgum day and night.

Checkpoints have also been established at the entrance to Pager Division, known to be notorious for thugs.

One truck full of policemen and another of military personnel arrived in Kitgum in the wee hours of the morning. These are supported with two police sniffer dogs and four police booths that are to be deployed in dark spots in each of the three divisions of the municipality, and 15 motorcycles with two armed police officers taking part in motorised patrols. There are at least four police trucks moving around the town among other private vehicles.

Inspector General of Police Kale Kayihura says the deployment will remain in place until the municipality is cleaned of criminals from Pager, Central and Pandwong Divisions.

William Komakech, the Resident District Commissioner Kitgum, however, calls on the public to report any incidences of harassment by errant officers who will be brought to book.

The operation is more intense in Ayul, a suburb of Kitgum Municipality, where the last victim of the shooting, Tonny Olanya, was murdered on Tuesday this week. The target area is a gang of youth growing and consuming opium. An unconfirmed number of arrests have been made.
