Old-Kira Road road block
Security has sealed off all roads leading to
the National Unity Platform-NUP headquarters in Kamwokya, a Kampala suburb. Heavily
armed police and military officers have set up roadblocks along all access
routes near the NUP offices, including the main Old Kira Road.
The area from Kamwokya to Bukoto, including
Old Kira Road, is now off-limits to cyclists, vehicles, and pedestrians, with
armed police and military personnel surrounding the area. This security
deployment comes in response to NUP's planned return celebrations for their
president, Robert Kyagulanyi.
The celebrations were scheduled to take place
at the party offices in Kamwokya. An anonymous party administrator alleged that
some military and police officers who stationed themselves at their offices
also arrested several of their colleagues who were organizing the offices.
“We
had hoped that our president would come to the office immediately after
returning from abroad, we had organized a celebration with him today. This is
the reason why the army broke into the offices and arrested some of my
colleagues. No one is allowed there at this moment,” he said.
Earlier, Kyagulanyi also known as Bobi Wine,
was whisked away by security operatives to his home in Magere Kasangati, Wakiso
district, upon his arrival at Entebbe International Airport. His interception at
the airport was first reported by NUP Secretary General David Lewis Rubongoya
and the Leader of the Opposition Matthias Mpuuga on their social media
platforms, who had waited for Kyagulanyi at the airport.
“Our
President Bobi Wine was picked up by regime operatives as soon as he
landed at the airport. They are so afraid of the people because they know
people don't like them,” Lubongoya said. Police Spokesperson Fred Enanga denied that Kyagulanyi had been
arrested. He stated that the NUP president had been received at the airport by
security and escorted to his home in Magere, Kasangati.
"He reached his home around 11.20 a.m. and
was with his family and friends. Disregard rumors of his arrest by
propagandists," Enanga said in a brief statement. On Wednesday, the police
had warned supporters of NUP who were reportedly mobilized for processions to
Entebbe International Airport to welcome their party president. It is alleged that several of Kyagulanyi's
supporters who were en route to the airport were arrested at roadblocks set up
along Entebbe Road.
