Patrick Oola Lumumba, the Bardege-Layibi Division Mayor who visited the crime scene Sunday evening told URN that the deceased along with other unidentified accomplices had been drinking when they illegally accessed the petrol station.
The Gulu West Policing
Division has arrested a 28-year-old security guard over
allegations of shooting a student dead. Police identified the deceased as
18-year-old Deo Ogen, a student of Omoro Ber Vocational School in Pece-Laroo
Division in Gulu City.
Ogen was reportedly shot dead at
around 4:42 Am Sunday by Solomon Oyuru, a security guard working with Exposs
Security Ltd and deployed at GASCO Fuel station in Bardege-Layibi Division in Gulu City. The Aswa West River Region Police Spokesperson, David Ongom Mudong noted that preliminary reports indicate the deceased along with
four other people allegedly accessed the fuel station with a matchbox on the
fateful morning.
According to Mudong, the security
guard in response fired a single shot from his gun that hit Ogen on his head killing
him instantly. He noted that Police detectives
responded to the crime scene and recovered a gun with registration PSO
564210980-15675 used by the suspect and loaded with 04 rounds of ammunition, and 1 used cartridge. The police also recovered 02 matchboxes, and a plastic water
bottle containing waragi according to Mudong.
“Much as the law warrants no one to take the
life of another, we call for calm as an investigation is being exhausted to
ascertain whether the shooting that claimed the life of the now deceased was
reasonable enough,” said Mudong. Patrick Oola Lumumba, the

According to Lumumba, the youth
after gaining access to the premises threatened to burn down the Fuel station
with a matchbox forcing the security guard to shoot the deceased without
warning.

Lumumba however noted that while the security
guard took charge of protecting the premises, he ought to have fired a warning
shot to scare away the youth.

According to Police, the deceased
body was transported to Gulu Regional Referral Morgue for postmortem while the
suspect is being detained as Police investigate the incident.
In March 2021, two students at St. Joseph’s College Layibi in Gulu City were shot dead and another injured by a
guard a security guard working with Exposs Security Ltd. The victims were reportedly shot while attempting to access Bright Valley Girls Primary and Secondary
School.
