Several market vendors have been hospitalized after sustaining injuries in a road accident that happened in Gulu this morning.

The vendors from Gulu Main Market were heading to Lungulu Market in Nwoya District when the driver of a truck they had just boarded lost control and crashed it at Blessed Petrol Station in Bardege-Layibi division.

Yusuf Ishak, a traffic police officer who responded to the crash says the truck driver identified as Joe Ochola failed to control the truck while approaching the fuel station and narrowly missed running over boda-boda operators who were stationed nearby. He faulted the driver for negligence and the vendors for continuously refusing to heed police caution against boarding dangerously loaded trucks.

John Byamugisha, the Police Commander in charge of the Gulu West Division says the truck has been towed to Gulu City West Police Station pending inspection by traffic officers. The injured vendors had been taken to St Mary’s Hospital Lacor for emergency medical treatment.

Dr Emintone Odong, the Medical Director of St. Mary’s Hospital Lacor told Uganda Radio Network that the injured were being stabilized by doctors and noted that the injuries were not severe.

Police and local authorities in Gulu City have over the past months condemned the use of trucks meant for cargo to transport passengers following past incidents that resulted in fatalities and injuries. Today’s crash comes nearly a year after a nasty road crash left four vendors dead and over 20 injured when a driver rammed into a perimeter wall in Gulu City. The vendors were returning from Lutuk Market in Koch Goma in Nwoya district.

Patrick Omaya, the Chairperson of Gulu Main Market vendors says the market authorities are instituting tight restrictions on the number of vendors carried onto trucks that transport merchandise to distant markets.
