According to police sources, prior to his shooting Kirya met with some friends at Kireka and decided to drop his bodyguard at Kireka Police barracks before heading home.
Kirya joins the list of other Muslim leaders kiled by unknown gun men in the recent past.
Last month, Sheikh Rashid Wafula, the former Imam of Bilal Mosque and Director of Nakaloke Islamic Primary and Secondary School in Mbale, was gunned down outside his home.
Others killed include Dr. Abdul Qadir Muwaya, the top Shia Cleric, Mustafa Bahiga, the Kampala District Amir and Sheikh Abdul Karim Ssentamu.
Police have repeatedly blamed the murder of Muslim clerics on remnants of the Allied Democratic Front-ADF rebels under the directives of their leader Sheikh Jamil Mukulu. Mukulu is currently battling his extradition from Tanzania to face trial in Uganda over the murders.
Several suspects have been arrested in connection to the murders including Sheikh Muhammad Yunus Kamoga, the Amir Ummah.
