Investigations into the gruesome murder of Catholic Brother,
Emmanuel Mugarura, have been taken over by police’s Special Investigations
Mugarura was found wrapped in a blue tarpaulin in his former student’s house,
Robert Asiimwe, in Kyambogo, Nakawa Division, in Kampala.
The body was discovered after a garbage collector who had been
contracted by Asiimwe to drop the garbage to the rubbish pit became suspicious
and alerted Banda police station.
Police Spokesperson Fred Enanga says that the Criminal Investigation Director,
Grace Akullo, assigned SID led by her deputy Joseph Obwana, to handle the
investigations because of numerous leads involved in the crime.
Police said that Asiimwe in his statement insisted that he killed
Mugarura in self-defence because he was driving him into sexual acts. Enanga
said SID would ensure there is substantive information to prove or dispel the
Detectives have established that on the eve of Mugarura’s death,
Asiimwe went to Rubaga in Kampala, where he had left his car and tried to
demand for it.
Asiimwe reportedly returned in the night alongside other colleagues and stole
the car from the parking lot but later abandoned it.
According to police, Asiimwe said he had left Mugarura resting at
his home and he had asked him to pick his car. The person who was keeping the
car refused to listen to Asiimwe’s explanation and asked him to call Mugarura
To his surprise, Mugarura’s body was discovered at around 9am the next day. The person who was keeping the car has since recorded a statement with police accounting for Asiimwe’s
attempts to steal the deceased’s car in the eve of his death.
Asiimwe was transferred from Banda police station to Jinja Road
police station but has since been take to SID for special interrogation.
Mugarura has been footing Asiimwe’s school costs since he was in
Primary. At time of his death, he was head of Kiteredde charismatic renewal in
Masaka but also a teacher at St Charles Lwanga in Bushenyi District.
