The Police in Bukedea district on Wednesday arrested at least six people for allegedly destroying homes of more than 36 residents of Koboli Village in Kidongole Sub County.

The suspects in Police custody are; Peter Ekoroi, Joseph Maning, Moses Omoit, Robert Okiror, Simon Omoding and a lady only identified as Rose- all residents of Kalupe in Kidongole Sub County. The group reportedly razed down seven households of suspected cattle thieves in the Koboli village last week.

Information from the area indicates that some of the members of the affected households were reportedly involved in theft of cattle from the neighbouring district of Butebo and other areas. It’s reported that whenever cases of cattle theft are taken to the police, little is done to address the issue, prompting residents to begin hunting suspects on their own.

Kasanja Opajo, the Parish Intelligence Security Officer (PISO) of Koboli says that the attacks in the village were a retaliation after another futile attempt in the recovery of stolen cattle from Butebo.

According to Opajo, the Police in Butebo district followed a case of cattle theft where the sniffer dog was involved last week. The dog reportedly led the police to the home of one, only identified as Epeet, resident of Koboli Village in Kidongole Sub County.

However, during the search in his household, no stolen items were recovered. Opajo adds that two days later, another case of cattle theft was reported in Butebo district where the Police sniffer dog led the detectives to the home of William Omumba in the same village. This infuriated the residents who took it up by razing down all homesteads of people suspected of stealing cattle from the community.

Clement Okello, one of the affected residents is stranded with 15 members of his household after the home was razed down. Okello says that some of the people have run away from the village because of fear. He wants the security team at the district to handle the matter with urgency to restore peace and livelihoods.
