A man in Kasese has dropped to death in an open pit. The incident occurred on Saturday afternoon in Kinyamaseke town board in Munkunyu sub-county.

Michael Arinitwe, the officer in charge of Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department Kinyamaseke Police Station identifies the deceased as Eric Masindi, a resident of North Division in Kinyamaseke town board.

Arinitwe says his men helped to retrieve the body from the 41 feet deep pit, when they received information that someone had died in the pit latrine that was still under construction.

He says they have launched investigations to establish what could have happened. The pit latrine belongs to Asuman Basaliza Kipanga, the chairperson of Kinyamaseke town board.

Stephen Bwambale, a relative to the deceased says Masindi was last seen on Friday evening drinking with friends and everyone thought he would retire to his home as usual. Bwambale says they were shocked to receive news of Masindi's death and the discovery of his body in a pit.

The family has asked Police to carry out full investigations into the matter saying Masindi's body had bruises when it was handed to them raising suspicion that he could have been strangled before he was thrown in the pit.

Residents who declined to be quoted are still puzzled on how the deceased went through the ring fence around the pit and fell in.

Johnson Mumbere, one of those who have been digging the pit says he was shocked to see someone lying at the bottom of the pit when he arrived for work. According to Mumbere, he immediately alerted his boss Kipanga who in turn notified Police.

Josephat Muhindo, the LC 3 chairperson Munkunyu sub-county also suspects that the death of Masindi could be the handwork of thugs who are killing people around the area. He says on Thursday night another person was strangled to death by unidentified people in the neighboring Nyakatonzi sub-county.

Muhindo who heads security in the sub-county advises residents to return back to their home early to avoid falling victims of the suspected gang.
