The government has allocated 6.9 Billion Shillings for the upgrading of Awoja piped water station in Soroti City. The station supplies water to Kaberamaido, Kalaki, Amuria, and Katakwi districts including Soroti City.

Awoja Water Pumping Station currently generates 5 million liters of water per day and the upgrade will lead to an increase of 2.5 million liters and will serve more than 10,000 households in Soroti City and neighboring sub-counties of Asuret, Kamuda, Arapai, and Gweri sub-counties.   The upgrade will be carried out by Updeal Uganda Limited.

Nelson Lenny Otai, the NWSC Soroti Branch Manager Soroti says that the works will commence in two weeks’ time and are expected to be completed in one year. He adds that with the construction of the pumping water station and installation of the necessary equipment, the water-stressed areas near Soroti City will be connected to piped water.

Janet Amego, a resident of Awoja trading centre says that the installation of water in the area will end the era of sharing water sources with domestic animals, which has been the norm in the area. Awoja trading centre is going to get piped water at the end of the project.

Mathew Epou another resident says that they have been suffering due to the shortage of clean water in the area. She says many women have been battered by their husbands because of coming late after looking for clean water.

David Obol, a resident of Awoja village explains that the development is timely especially when the district has been spending huge funds on drilling boreholes, which break down after a short time.

This is the second piped water project in the Teso region. In 2020, the 20 Billion Shillings Agu piped water project was constructed to supply water to Ngora and Kumi districts.
