St. Paul Catholic Church in Wantoni Village, Mukono Municipality, is seeking assistance in reuniting a 17-year-old mute girl, Christabel Namazzi, with her family. Namazzi, who can write in English and Swahili, was referred to the church by Mukono General Hospital staff on December 6, 2024.

Namazzi identifies her parents as Samuel Muhonjo and Katana Mwinda and her sisters as Bianca Namakula and Aisha Khalid. However, she cannot recall the exact location of her home despite stating she is from Entebbe. According to the parish priest, Fr. Paul Ssebitoogo, police found Namazzi unconscious along the road and took her to Mukono General Hospital.

When no one came to care for her after she recovered, a hospital staff member who attends St. Paul’s referred her to the church. “When she recovered, she stayed at the hospital for days and no one was taking care of her. Then one of the medical personnel who prays from here, sent her here because he knew that we were going to take care of her. Unfortunately, Christabel can't speak, but she can write English and Swahili. She doesn't know the exact location where she comes from despite saying she is from Entebbe,” Fr. Ssebitoogo notes.

“We took her to different parts of Entebbe, but she could not recognize any place. She has shared memories of being restricted to her home and home-schooled. She recalls seeing a maid open the gate for a vehicle driven by a man who later gave her cake, after which she lost consciousness,” Fr. Ssebitoogo recounted.

“She is so eager to go back home, to know her home, to know the place and her parents, as well as reunite with them. However, we have no problem staying with her, as long as we get to know her home place, her parents, and others. So, please, anybody who can help us to find her parents, please do contact us,” Fr. Ssebitoogo says.

Efforts to circulate her images and details to police stations in Greater Kampala have been unsuccessful. No record of a missing person’s report matching Namazzi’s case has been found. St. Paul’s Church often assists homeless children, helping to reunite them with their families or referring them to children’s homes when relocation efforts fail. The church is urging anyone with information about her family or home to come forward to help her find her way back.
