Tour operators in Kabale and Kisoro district have raised concern over the poor state of roads leading to national parks and others attractions.

Some of the tourism attractions in the region include Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in Kisoro district, Virunga Volcanoes, Mount Muhavura, Mount Gahinga and Mount Sabinyo.

Bwindi and Mughahinga National parks receive hundreds of visitors who flock the area to track the rare Mountain Gorillas. However, the roads leading to the parks are in a sorry state.

Some of the roads that connect to the sites include Ikumba-Ruhija-Butogota road, Muko –Rushaga road, Kisoro –Rubuguri road and Katojo–Rubuguri road.

Tour operators want Uganda Wildlife Authority to pressurise Uganda National Roads Authority-UNRA to ensure that the roads are in a good state to ease the cost of operating business.

Fedelesi Kanyanmunyu, the Director of Wagtail Eco Safari camp in Rubuguri town board in Kirundo Sub County in Kisoro district, says the state of the roads has worsened with the onset of the rainy season.

He says as a result some tourists have opted to stay in hotels around Kisoro town because they find it difficult to travel to hotels outside town. James Rwabushaija, the proprietor of Coffee Point at Ruhija in Bwindi National park, says the poor state of the roads has been their biggest challenge.

He says some of the tourists mock them about the poor state of the roads, asking where the money from the sector ends up. Pontius Ezuma, the Bwindi–Mughahinga area conservation manager, says the poor state of the road is affecting the sector.

He says that the authority has always liaised with Uganda National Roads Authority and districts

surrounding the park to save the situation.
