The Uganda Association of Public Prosecutors has dragged government to court for failing to increase the salaries of state prosecutors.
In an application filed at the High Court in Kampala by lawyer Emma Muwonge of Katende, Ssempebwa and Co. Advocates, the Association wants court to compel the government, the Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs and Secretary to the Treasury to enforce their commitment of increasing salaries, remuneration and other conditions of service for the prosecutors.
In July 2017, the prosecutors voted to suspend their strike over pay for ninety days pending government's promise to solve their grievances. They had spent more than a month on strike demanding for salary increment on ground that they handle complicated cases like terrorism, corruption and murder.
The government then promised that it would waive taxes on prosecutors' salaries, provide professional allowances in the financial 2018/2019 and increase the salaries of the prosecutors to a level equivalent to salaries of employees in the Uganda Registration Service Bureau.
According to the application which is scheduled for hearing in March 2019, government had promised to fulfil the commitments within 90 days but one year and a half later, the government is yet to respond to their grievances.
The lowest ranking state prosecutor earns a monthly gross pay of 644,963 shillings whereas the highest ranking prosecutor at the rank of senior principal State attorney is paid 2.1 million shillings.
