Acholi Students Union, an umbrella body that brings together students in higher institutions of learning from the Acholi Sub-region has launched a fundraising drive for the renovation of a council hall at the Acholi Cultural Institution.

The students say the council hall which hosts key activities among them council meetings of chiefs and mediation exercises is currently in a sorry state and not befitting for the institution.

Stella Laker, the President of the Acholi Students Union says the students took up the initiative in a bid to give back to the cultural institution which stands as a pillar of hope and unity for the Acholi community.

Laker says the students through their engineers made an assessment of the structure and came up with a budget of 8.2 million Shillings to conduct the renovation works. She notes that they have raised so far three million shillings among the students and have embarked on raising more funds from other stakeholders for the renovation.

Stephen Odora, the Deputy Speaker of the Acholi Students Union says the renovation of the dilapidated structure will help to mend the relationship between the students and leaders at the cultural institution.

He says the activity won’t only benefit the cultural institution but also the entire Acholi community who use the facility.

The students were set to launch the official fundraising drive for the cultural institution on June 30.

But Laker says the activity is currently on halt pending the tension between a rival faction of the chiefs and cultural institution leaders.

Last week, a section of clan chiefs from the Acholi Sub-region announced that they have voted out the Paramount Chief of Acholi David Onen Acana II, and his entire leadership team owing to a number of reasons among them an alleged plot to sell away the institution’s land.

The chiefs also elected the Atiak Clan Chief Santo Apire as an interim Paramount Chief and formed executive members to steer the institution for three months.

According to Laker, the current tension at the cultural institution is not healthy for the community in Acholi and notes that as students they have proposed to intervene in mediation.

Ambrose Olaa, the Acholi Cultural Institution Premier told Uganda Radio Network in an interview that the student’s initiative is timely arguing that they have been long seeking support from other stakeholders to renovate the structure.

He says the renovation works will cover the council hall roofing, ceiling boards, and painting.

Acholi Students Union boasts of a membership of more than 1,500 students spread across 15 universities in the country.
