Police in Kotido district have arrested the LCIII Chairperson of Kapeeta Sub County for allegedly withdrawing government iron sheets from reformed warriors.

Simon Peter Lokonyen and Christine Nameja the Kapeeta sub-county Chief who is currently on the run are accused of taking away ten iron sheets from the reformed warriors who benefited from the ongoing distribution program.

The police also recovered 135 iron sheets which were kept in the store at the sub-county headquarters.

The arrest comes after Peter Lodia and Robert Loden, reformed warriors, reported a case of theft to Kotido Central police station. They accused the sub-county officials of taking away the iron sheets which they received from the Office of the Prime Minister.

They alleged that after receiving the 26 iron sheets each, the accused officers approached them and withdrew the iron sheets as the officers claimed to have fought hard for their names to be included in the beneficiaries list.

Lodia, a reformed Karamojong warrior, blamed the sub-county chief for taking five iron sheets from what he received from the government.

Lodia stressed that it is very unfair for their leaders to steal from them despite the hardship they are going through. He noted that this was the time they expected their leaders to lobby for more support to transform the lives of reformed warriors instead of robbing the vulnerable community.

‘’We still need more support from the government, and it’s our leaders to help us advocate for the programs that can transform us but again they are also turning to steal from us’’ Lodia wondered.

Loden, another reformed warrior who received the iron sheets, pinned the LCIII Chairperson for taking away ten iron sheets leaving him with only sixteen out of twenty-six.

Isiah Lokech, the LCV Councilor for Kapeeta Sub County testified that they received the iron sheets at the sub-county and the distribution exercise that was led by security forces ended smoothly.

Lokech condemned the act, describing it as a shame for the officers to withdraw the iron sheets from the vulnerable people instead of finding other ways of helping them construct houses.

He also revealed that he has so far received seven complaints from the beneficiaries in the five parishes.

Robert Kacuma, the Kotido District Police Commander said that they have launched investigations into the matter and the sub-county chairperson has already been arrested.

He reiterated that they are monitoring the iron sheet distribution exercise closely to ensure that items go to the intended beneficiaries.

John Lukooki Magezi the Kotido Deputy Resident District Commissioner warned the local leaders to desist from sabotaging government programs by stealing from the vulnerable community.

Magezi noted that he received several complaints about leaders who wanted to mismanage the iron sheet program for political reasons.

Magezi reiterated that the iron sheets were intended to benefit only the reformed warriors who embraced peace and it was part of the appreciation from the government.
