Ben Chesang Lwendok, the Chesower sub-county chief in Bukwo district has narrowly escaped the wrath of angry residents. The residents attempted to rough up Chesang on Monday accusing him of embezzling Shillings 18 million disbursed under the road fund for repairs.
Accompanied by the sub-county LC 3 chairperson, Denis Chemusto, the protesters locked the Chief's office and warned him not to dare return without refunding the money. Upon hearing the development, Bukwo District Police Commander, Aminis Kayondo dispatched a team of officers led by the officer in charge of the Chesower police post to take control of the situation and rescue the chief.
"When we got the information about the incident, we rushed and the situation is calm although the locals padlocked the office of the sub-county chief," he said. He said they have launched investigations into the resident's grievance.
Priscilla Chemos, a resident says that it was so hurting to see roads in bad shape in the sub-county yet government sends funds to the sub-county. Denis Chemusto, the LC 3 chairperson hailed the residents, saying it was their right to demand accountability for the public resources. "Residents have kept asking me when the roads will be worked on. I told them the truth and they acted," he said.
The embattled sub-county chief, Chesang Lwendok could not be reached for comment. Samuel Hashakah Mpimbasa, the Bukwo Resident District Commissioner, says that the rampant corruption in the district has frustrated development.
