The joint security forces have shot dead a suspected cattle rustler and recovered an SMG rifle belonging to Uganda Prison Services from Acholi Inn trading center in Rupa sub-county in Moroto district.

Acholi inn village, which is just about a kilometer away from Moroto town is a known blackspot, where raiders buy refreshments as they plan their next move.

Michael Longole, the Mt. Moroto region police spokesperson, says that the incident happened around 9:00 pm on Sunday after the joint security team comprising the police and UPDF officers on night patrol within Acholi inn found the warrior trying to sneak into a bar with an SMG rifle and five rounds of ammunition.

Longole says that the joint security team shot the warrior killing him on the spot. The officers recovered an SMG rifle UG 56-355861302109 with five rounds of ammunition.

‘’We believe that this firearm is among the 14guns inmates stole during the 2020 breakout at Moroto prisons’’ he said.  The deceased’s body is lying at Moroto regional hospital mortuary pending postmortem as they wait for his relatives to show up.

John Lokwii, a resident in the same area applauded the police for their great job, saying that the center has been described as a territory of no government. Lokwii says warriors have been taking advantage of the absence of security in the area to move freely with their guns at night.

‘’We have been seeing them around crossing over going to raid. They even buy waragi from here but of course, we are not their target so they prepare their things and disappear. Now that security forces have started camping here I’m sure they will catch many warriors since this is their pathway,’’ Lokwii said.

In September 2020, 248 inmates overpowered prison warders at Singila prison in Moroto district and made off with 14 guns and 480 ammunition. David Charles Opio, the Mt. Moroto Regional Prisons commander has confirmed to URN that the recovered rifle is one of 14 guns taken by the inmates.

This now brings to seven, the number of firearms recovered from those taken by the inmates.  Opio says he’s optimistic that by the end of the current disarmament exercise, they would have recovered all the firearms lost during the prison break.

In December 2021, the joint security forces who were on disarmament in Kotido district arrested the ringleader of the Moroto prison break. He was arrested with an SMG rifle with 14 rounds of ammunition belonging to Uganda prison services.
