Suspected Gang Leader Detained Over Teenager's Death

While most of the attendees complied with the demand, Balidawa took a courageous stand. He held the microphone and advised others to seek temporary refuge in Luliika's main house while they planned to contact the police for assistance. The announcement seemed to have angered Gojja, who proceeded to cut Balidawa in the left arm.
The Busoga East police are holding Mubarak Gojja, the suspected leader of a notorious gang known for wielding machetes in connection with the death of 17-year-old Silver Balidawa. It is reported that Balidawa had been hired as a disco joker-DJ for a family party at the residence of Swalik Luliika in Nawaningyi sub-county, Iganga district. During the event, Gojja and other suspects armed with machetes stormed the gathering, demanding that attendees surrender their valuables under the threat of violence.

He then ordered his gang members to inflict further harm on Balidawa, leaving him bleeding for nearly half an hour before they fled the scene. Balidawa was rushed to Iganga General Hospital's emergency unit, where he succumbed to his injuries. Luliika expressed his distress over the incident, especially in front of his guests who had gathered to celebrate his 79th birthday.

He explained that most of his guests, primarily women, and youth, sought refuge in his house after realizing that they were ill-equipped to confront the armed assailants without professional security personnel. Luliika also voiced concerns about the growing drug abuse among the youth, which he believes contributes to a rise in criminal activities.

He explains that this incident has left many residents feeling unsafe, with some choosing to confine themselves within their homes for fear of similar attacks. Diana Nandawula, the Busoga East police spokesperson, confirmed the incident, saying that Balidawa's body is lying at Iganga General Hospital mortuary pending a postmortem examination.

She says that detectives have already gathered statements from eyewitnesses and revisited the scene to collect evidence that will aid in their investigation. Nandawula has also issued a stern warning to youths, cautioning them against engaging in criminal activities, emphasizing the severe consequences such actions could have, including long-term imprisonment or even loss of life.
