Suspected Karimonjong Warriors Severely Injure Elderly Couple in Kitgum

The victims were reportedly attacked last night when the assailants armed with bows and arrows raided their home in Labongo Otal village, Gule Parish in Orom Sub-county. Security identified the victims as Faustino Oyoo, 73, and his wife Laura Apio, 65, who are currently undergoing medical treatment at Namokora Health Center IV.
An elderly couple in Kitgum District has been hospitalized with severe body injuries after being attacked by suspected armed Karimojong warriors.

Captain Gabriel Otukuyibu, an army intelligence officer attached to Lamwo Battalion in a statement to Police investigators at Kitgum Central Police station says the attackers shot the victims using bows and arrows during the raid. He says the assailants shot Oyoo once on his back and twice on the stomach before attacking his wife who was also shot twice in the stomach using a bow and arrow.

The suspects according to Cpt. Otukuyibu later looted all food items in the victim's store and unspecified household property.

The Aswa River Region Police Spokesperson David Ongom Mudong confirmed the incident saying a joint team of security forces comprising the Police and army responded to the scene and evacuated both victims for emergency medical treatment.

He says that although no arrest has yet been effected, security personnel are on the ground pursuing the suspects. A case of attempted murder and aggravated robbery has been registered at Kitgum Central Police Station.

The incident comes in the wake of a renewed influx of armed rustlers from the Karamoja region and neighbouring South Sudan into the border districts of Kitgum and Lamwo respectively.

Maj. Flavia Terimulungi, the 5th Infantry Division Spokesperson told Uganda Radio Network in an interview that the vast porous border points of Lamwo with South Sudan and the neighbouring Karamoja region are hampering the effective fight against rustlers’ invasion.

Just a week ago, a UPDF officer attached to Lamwo’s Battalion in Bana Bana Barracks identified as Alfred Ociti was shot dead by suspected armed rustlers from South Sudan’s Ikoto’s county. The deceased was among a group of UPDF officers pursuing the suspected rustlers in Lawiye Oduny village in Madi-Opei Sub-county when he met his death.

Early last month, a prison warden attached to Orom-Tikao Prison in Orom Sub-county was also attacked and killed from his farm by suspected Karimojong warriors. A joint security force comprising the Police and army are currently conducting forceful disarmament exercise in the Karamoja region, a move that has seen many suspected rustlers and warriors crossing into hideouts to the neighbouring Agago and Kitgum District.
