Suspected Landmine Injures Bushenyi Beekeeper

Martial Tumusiime the greater Bushenyi region Police spokesperson says the incident occurred when the victim went to check on his bee hives and he decided to cut grasses around but in the process an object exploded injuring him in the stomach.


One person has survived with severe injuries following an explosion of a suspected landmine in Rutooma ward Rwentuha town council Bushenyi district.

  The injured is Abraham Ruhesi, 42, a resident of Kyamagambo Cell.  

Benson Barekye the Kyamagambo LC 1 Chairperson says the incident happened this morning as Ruhesi was slashing a place where he carries out beekeeping and in the process he either slashed or stepped on the suspected landmine.  

He says the explosion hit him in the stomach and left leg, leaving him critically injured.

Naboth Nabasa the Rwentuha Town Council Chairperson LC III says the explosion is suspected to have remained during the 1985 NRA bush war.  

He warns residents against tampering with anything they find in the soils and don't know.

He says he was rushed to Kampala International University teaching hospital where he is in intensive care.  

Tumusiime says a metallic cover of what is likely to have exploded has been recovered, two live ammunition rounds, and another unidentified object so far left at the scene pending retrieval as inquiries continue.  

Godfrey Sande, the UPDF Second Division Spokesperson referred our reporter to the regional Police Spokesperson noting that he is yet to be notified.
