Suspected South Sudanese Rustlers Shoot UPDF Soldier Dead

Alfred Ocitti, 27, attached to Lamwo Battalion Bana Bana Barracks was reportedly shot dead at about 11 Am Friday morning in Lawiye oduny Parish in Madi-opei Sub-county.
Suspected armed South Sudanese cattle rustlers have shot dead a Uganda Peoples Defence Forces-UPDF Soldier in Lamwo District.

Alfred Ocitti, 27, attached to Lamwo Battalion Bana Bana Barracks was reportedly shot dead at about 11 am on Friday in Lawiye oduny Parish, Madi-opei Sub County.

Felix Nyero Lawii, the Madi-opei Sub County LCIII Chairperson says the deceased was among a group of UPDF soldiers pursuing suspected armed rustlers who had camped at Madi hills when they came under heavy gunfire.

He notes that the suspects had three days ago looted goats from Oryang village but a local farmer who had gone to harvest bamboo at Madi hills early Friday morning spotted them from their hideout before alerting security personnel.

According to Nyero, security personnel who responded to the emergency calls however engaged in a heated gunfire exchange with the suspects who had laid an ambush, leaving one of their men with fatal gunshot injuries.

“The suspects have all along been planning to raid kraals in Oryang village and loot cattle but security have been on high alert ever since a similar incident a week ago,” says Nyero.

He notes that the deceased’s body was taken to Madi-opei Health Center IV where a post-mortem is expected to be conducted.

Nyero regretted the incident and appealed for more security deployment to avert the persistent incursion of the armed rustlers from the neighbouring Ikotos County in South Sudan.

Lamwo Resident District Commissioner Nabinson Kidega confirmed the incident but didn’t divulge details on the shootout.

The Fifth Infantry Division Commander Brig. William Bainomugisha however says he hasn't yet got reports of the incident.

"I am not aware of the incident. I will verify the information and let you know shortly" Brig. Bainomugisha told this reporter.

The incident comes just a week after a UPDF soldier also attached to Bana Bana Barracks was shot and injured in a shootout with suspected south Sudan cattle rustlers in Madi-opei Sub-county.
