The Grade One magistrate court in Lira has remanded a 30-year-old secondary school teacher for the alleged murder of his wife.

Boniface Aweri, a teacher at Kiryandongo High School and a resident of Ireda Shamba cell, Lira City was arrested last week following the death of his wife Licinia Akirapa Aweri.

On Tuesday, Aweri appeared before Lira Grade One Magistrate Igga Adiru and charged with murder. He was remanded until July 5.

“This is a capital offence so you cannot take your plea before me because I do not have the jurisdiction to handle the matter. You are remanded until 15th July when you will appear at the high court for plea taking. However, you can apply for bail at the high court which has jurisdiction.”

Aweri aged 30 years was a community paralegal with Human Rights Awareness and Promotion Forum.

Her body was discovered at their home on Thursday morning with a rope tied around her neck.

However, investigations later showed that the deceased was strangled to death and later a rope tied around her neck to suggest suicide.
