Tear gas in Bwaise

Tear gas rocked Bwaise this evening as security battled Forum for Democratic Change-FDC Presidential Candidate Patrick Oboi Amuriat and his supporters who where going to Kazo to campaign.

Amuriat with his escort vehicles arrived at Bwaise  traffic lights from Kawempe and wanted to head to Kazo Playground to address voters but police blocked the way.

For over ten minutes, Amuriat and local leaders from the FDC exchanged words with police and Military police personnel who were blocking him and directing him to Mambule Road which heads to Kyebando on Gayaza Road.

For about ten minutes there was a disruption of traffic as vehicles couldn't move. Later, security allowed Amuriat to proceed to Nabweru road that goes to Kazo but again, they stopped him after about 300 meters away from the traffic lights.

Residents here also started reconvening as some were anxious to see him barefoot. Amuriat is running what he calls a barefoot revolution having appeared at the nomination center in November without shoes. He lost his shoes on nomination day in a scuffle with security personnel at the FDC offices.

At Nabweru Road, Amuriat later escaped from security and went back to the traffic lights driving swiftly to Bombo Road. Security later caught up with him at the Bwaise roundabout close to La Grand Hotel. There was a stand off here for more than fifteen minutes until vehicles and Boda Bodas started hooting endlessly.

Again military police and traffic police convinced him to drive away. He then headed to Bwaise to turn and go home since time for campaigning had lapsed.

Amuriat had earlier campaigned in Nakawa Market after escaping from Security using a Boda Boda. He also campaigned in Naguru Market Go down and Kawempe.

Amuriat is expected to campaign in Buikwe and Jinja tomorrow Friday.
