A 17 year old girl in Kitgum has committed suicide after being accused by Police for dumping her new-born baby girl in a pit latrine.

Patrick Okello Lumumba, the Officer of Charge of Crime Intelligence and Investigation Kitgum Police station identifies the deceased as Jacqueline Aketowanga, a former pupil at Pajimo Army Primary school in Akwang Sub County.

Okello explains that Aketowanga was picked up on Friday last week for dumping a seven months old baby in pit latrine in Ateng village, Pajimo Parish on Valentine’s Day. She insisted the baby had accidently dropped into the pit latrine while she was trying to ease herself.

The post mortem report indicates the baby died of suffocation. Okello explains that after questioning the suspect, they released her on police bond on Sunday to seek medication for post natal complications.

He however, says that they received information on Tuesday indicating the suspect had committed suicide. Aketowanga committed suicide by hanging herself on a nearby tree.

Both the body of the deceased and the new born were laid to rest in Akwang Sub County on Wednesday evening.

Before her death, Aketowanga had told Police, the father of her baby had declined to take responsibility for the child.

Okello says they had advised the suspect to pursue a case of defilement against the accused man, but she chose not to. Aketowanga’s case brings to three, the number of people who have committed suicide in the district within a space of less than a month.

Recently, a man hanged himself on the roof top of Ayul A village just days after a P.7 pupil killed himself over his poor PLE results in Quarters, Kitgum Town Council.
