Seventeen-year-old Mohammed Mukwaya from Busowoko village in Butagaya sub-county, Jinja district, has passed away after sustaining injuries in a domestic brawl. The incident occurred after Mukwaya and his friend, Junior Nekemiya, attended a wedding ceremony in Kamuli district on Sunday evening.
The duo reportedly got into an altercation over a sex worker in the Butagaya trading center, which escalated into a physical fight. During the altercation, Mukwaya fell to the ground. Onlookers initially dismissed the scene, assuming that Mukwaya had simply been overpowered. However, when Mukwaya failed to get up after nearly 10 minutes, they rushed him to Buwenge General Hospital.
Despite receiving medical attention, Mukwaya remained unresponsive and was subsequently referred to Jinja Regional Referral Hospital, where he sadly passed away. A resident familiar with the situation described Mukwaya and Nekemiya as known sugarcane cutters who often frequented the trading center in the evenings, where they were prone to disagreements and fights.
Mukwaya's brother, Alamanzan Kakaire, is seeking justice for his brother, whom he described as a hardworking individual with a promising future. A health worker, speaking anonymously, revealed that a CT scan showed Mukwaya had sustained severe head injuries that blocked key neural veins, leading to inadequate oxygen supply to the brain, which likely caused his death.
The Kiira Regional Police spokesperson, James Mubi, confirmed the incident and stated that Nekemiya has been arrested and is currently detained at Buwenge Central Police Station on suspicion of murder.
