The increasing infanticide in Lyantonde district has drawn concern among residents, local leaders and the police. Infanticide is the killing or murder of babies or infants by their mothers or parents.

Timothy Kamugasha, the Lyantonde District Probation Officer, says at least ten babies have been killed and their bodies dumped in forests and thickets in different parts of the district over the last two months.

The latest incident is the case of a seven months baby whose body was discovered in a bush at Kijjukizo B village in Lyantonde town council on Tuesday.  Kamugasha says the body was discovered by herdsmen who immediately notified the residents and local authorities.

He says that the bodies of the deceased were buried in a cemetery on different days since no one claimed them. Kamugasha argues that parents and guardians have not fully played their role of counseling and guiding their children about sex.

John Muddu, the Kijjuukizo ‘B’ LC I chairperson, says this is the second body of an infant to be found in the same forest since January.  He condemned the act attributing it to unwanted pregnancies especially among teenagers. Muddu says that several girls below 17 years were impregnated by men and fellow children during the lockdown due to the closure of schools.

Muddu appealed to teenagers not to rush for sex and to the adults to be careful not to get pregnant without a plan.

Denis Odoki, the Lyantonde District Police Commander, says they are making inquiries to identify the deceased’s mother in order to bring her to book for murder.
