Three Arrested for Alleged Murder of Student

The Police in Kitgum Municipality have arrested three people in connection with the gruesome murder of a 22-year-old student.

Daniel Ocira, a senior five student of Kitgum High School was reportedly killed by unknown people at Acutomer B, Cell in Kitgum Municipality in the wee hours of Wednesday night.

Police have identified the suspects as Ronald Komagum 22, a businessman, Johnson Oyoo 17, a student at Salt and Light Vocational Institute Kitgum, and Emmanuel Rubangakene 18, an electrician. The suspects are all being detained at Kitgum Central Police Station where a case of murder has been registered under CRB 1154/2024.

Anatoli Katungwenzi, the Aswa East Regional Police Commander, told Uganda Radio Network Thursday that the police have commenced investigations. 

"We are investigating the circumstances surrounding Daniel Ocira's murder. The suspects are cooperating with our inquiries," said Katungwenzi.

Katungwezi revealed that the suspects were taken to the police by Odoch Richard, the Local Council One Chairperson of Acutomer B Cell after they confessed to the crime. According to Katungwenzi, the deceased was reportedly attacked and killed on Wednesday, on his way home from town.

"We urge anyone with information regarding this incident to come forward," Katungwenzi said.

Christopher Opoka, the head teacher of Kitgum High School said the student had not yet reported to school for the third term when he met his death. He however confirmed the deceased had sat for term I and term II exams at the school.

This is the second death of a student in Kitgum Municipality. Last week, Lamwaka Hellen Benita, a student of YY Okot Memorial College died after being struck in the neck by a lawn mower blade.

Meanwhile, the police in Pader District have arrested a 71-year-old man over an allegation of hacking three people in Lee Ogweyo village in Pungole Parish, Angagura Sub- County on Wednesday. 

The suspect identified as James Oyet reportedly used a sharp machete to hack his wife, uncle and a neighbour after picking up quarrels over food. The victims are his wife Esther Auma 50, whose left hand was chopped off, his uncle Richard Ojara 52 whose ear was cut and Christine Apiyo 51, a neighbour who was hacked on the head.

Dickson Ojok, the Angagura Sub-county LCV Councilor said the suspect is being detained at Angagura Police post pending further investigation while the injured have been rushed to St Mary's Hospital Lacor for treatment.
