Three Arrested over Kabale Robberies

Three people have been arrested in connection with the armed robberies in Kabale District.

The suspects are Edison Asiimwe, aged 46, a resident of Rwabakina village in Nyanja parish, Maziba Sub County, Martin Byaruhanga ,31, a boda-boda rider and a resident of Kinyu village, Central division, Kabale Municipality and Benson Katamba, 38, a resident of Katete central village, Katete ward, Nyamitanga division, Mbarara Municipality.

They were arrested in an operation conducted by the police and other security agencies.

Elly Maate, the Kigezi region police spokesperson says that during the operation, police recovered an AK47 rifle number UGPS03402253-07135, a pair of Uganda Peoples Defense Forces -UPDF uniform and that of the Uganda Wildlife Authority-UWA, machete, and a Bajaj boxer motorcycle registration number UEK 649R.

Maate says that Byaruhanga was responsible for transporting the robbers using the motorcycle which was robbed at gunpoint from Phenehansi Niwagaba last month.

Asiimwe was also found in possession of a gun, and a pair of army and UWA uniforms and a machete which the gang used in robbing the victims.

In the past two months, Kabale district has witnessed a spate of murders and robberies.

Last month, gunmen shot dead Rogers Byaruhanga, a boda-boda cyclist and a resident of Murambi cell, Kitojo parish, Bubaare Sub County, Rubanda district.

In July, Francis Aryarugamu a businessman and his wife Zamu Kenkoonzi, both residents of Bataka cell, Mwanjari ward Southern Division, Kabale municipality were shot by unknown thugs. The two were on their way home in Mwanjari Trading Center shortly after closing their soda depot in Kabale Central Market when they were attacked by two men, riding on a motorcycle.

The thugs reportedly grabbed from Kenkoonzi, a black polythene bag containing watermelon and took off thinking it was money.

Late August 2018, another businessman only identified as Milton, the Proprietor of Unique Mini Supermarket in central division, Kabale municipality was also robbed off six million shillings on gunpoint by unknown thugs.
