Three people are in custody at Kabale police station for allegedly kidnapping and robbing a businessman at the Uganda-Rwanda border in Katuna, Kabale district. The suspects are Henry Bakerwa, 55, a resident of Rwamirindi village, Rushaka Parish, Kayonza sub-county, Rushenyi county, Ntungamo district, Bashil Twesigye, 41, a resident of Ruti, Mbarara City, and Sam Twesigye, 38, from Kampala.

The incident reportedly occurred on November 10, 2023, when the suspects purportedly abducted 29-year-old Bruce Tusiime at the Katuna border. They allegedly forcibly placed Tusiime in a grey Toyota Wish (registration number UBH 734V), covered his face and restrained him with ropes.

During the abduction, the suspects purportedly assaulted Tusiime and extorted Shillings 5 million from him as they traveled towards Kabale town. They later abandoned him at Bubare along the Kabale-Kisoro road. Elly Maate, the Kigezi region police spokesperson, confirmed that police officers spotted the vehicle on Kabale-Katuna road on Tuesday evening and impounded it.

Following the arrest of the driver, Tusiime reportedly identified him as part of the group involved in the robbery.  The suspect later assisted the police in locating their accomplices hiding in Kabale town.

The case has been officially registered at Kabale police station under file number CRB 844/2023. This incident isn't an isolated occurrence at the Katuna border involving the abduction and robbery of businessmen. In October 2019, a gang led by Barham Twebaze of Ruruku village, Kagunga ward, Eastern Division Rukungiri municipality, abducted money changer Semwogerere Kijwengye.

The gang robbed Kijwengye of 10 million Shillings after driving him in his own Toyota Harrier (registration number UBE 981F). However, the suspects were intercepted by the police at Kisiizi Hospital in Nyarushanje sub-county, Rukungiri district, along the Muhanga-Kisiizi-Kebisoni road.
