Kiryandongo police
are holding three Traditional Birth Attendants-TBAs in connection to the death
of a newly born baby.
The suspects are
Sauda Nabwire, Hellen Wandera and Jalia Nakasunde, all residents of Kigumba
town Council in Kiryandongo district.
Deo Obura, the Albertine
Region Police Commander-RPC, says the trio was picked on Sunday evening in
connection to the death of the baby.
He says the three helped an expectant
mother to deliver on Sunday afternoon at Katalama cell but the child died in
the process and the mother bled profusely.
Residents ganged up
against the TBAs and attempted to lynch them but they were rescued by police,
which whisked them to Kiryandongo Central Police Station.
He says the suspects will appear in court
once police investigations are complete.

He warns expectant
mothers to desist from seeking services of TBAs and instead go to health
centers.
Government outlawed TBAs in 2009 after discovering that they had
deviated from their major role of identifying and referring expectant mothers
to health centers for delivery.
However, some of the TBAs have continued
operating to date especially where access to antenatal care is still limited.
