Business operators in the Rwenzori region have asked the Uganda Revenue Authority – URA to improve on its methods of communication.

During a stakeholders meeting that was organised by URA at Mountains of the Moon Hotel in Fort Portal on Thursday, URA was accused of not informing the public about the updated electronic systems, how the taxes paid are put to use and among others.

Paul Kasande, the Chief executive officer of Private Sector Development and Consultancy Centre in Fort Portal said that some taxpayers do not understand how the various taxes come into effect and consequences of not paying them.

Cue out… information dissemination.”//

He also tasked URA to explain the issue of double taxation, saying that some people up to now do not understand why MTN Uganda mobile money transactions are taxed twice.

Cue out… back to banks?”//

Mariam Kluge, the proprietor of Kluge Guest Farm in Kabarole, added that on top of lack of information, URA sends harsh emails to clients.

Cue out… we are partners.”//

Margaret Kihika, the Vice LCV chairperson Kabarole district asked URA officials to waive off tax from smallholder farmers. She explained that several farmers are struggling to engage in agriculture due to the high taxes levied on inputs.

John Kiyaga, the URA regional manager for domestic taxes said they cannot waive off taxes because they are lawfully put in place by the government.

He also admitted that there is an information gap between the authority and the taxpayers.

Kiyaga however, revealed that effective next month, URA shall start an awareness campaign aimed at equipping taxpayers with information regarding the types of taxes paid, how they can be paid and how the money collected is used.

Cue out… as of now.”//
